Kinsol Trestle: access, the walk and what to notice
Plan the southern approach to this timber landmark, then give yourself time to appreciate the structure.
Use the correct approach
Start with the CVRD’s Kinsol Trestle page and its current directions. Public vehicle access is from the Shawnigan Lake side to the south parking area. Do not assume that a map pin on the other side offers equivalent public parking.
The authority describes the approach as a wide, flat trail surfaced with crushed gravel fines. That is useful information for planning, but not a guarantee for every wheelchair, mobility aid or weather condition. Ask about current surface conditions if these determine whether the visit works.
Make the bridge more than a photograph
Pause before crossing and look at how the timbers carry the deck around the curve. The CVRD records a structure 187 metres long and 44 metres above the Koksilah River. The changing angle of the supports is part of the experience; you do not need to leave the designated trail for a worthwhile view.
Keep the through-route clear for other visitors. Walkers, cyclists and equestrians share the wider trail system. A busy bridge is a place to slow down, make intentions clear and stop where others can pass.
Plan for the actual outing
Bring the layers and footwear you would choose for a forest walk, including after rain. Take drinking water and something to eat if your meal will be later. Download the approach details before travelling rather than depending on a signal at the parking area.
Check the authority’s notices before departure and obey any on-site closure. Photos of an open bridge describe the day they were taken, not today’s access.
Pair it with one nearby stop
A Shawnigan Lake meal or short public-shore visit is a natural companion. A longer cycle ride is a different plan: establish the surface, distance, return route and group capability before extending the outing.
Our weekend outline leaves the afternoon flexible so the trestle does not become a rushed stop between appointments.
